Teachers, it's that time of year where students become complacent with their work, extra-curricular activities become demanding, classes are picking up their course load and state testing is right around the corner. It's important to take care of our students mental health and wellness, as many of them feel the stress but little of them know how to deal with it. Set your students up for success through these 10 tips to help students handle stress.
Tip 1: Be Realistic: Don't promise to do more than you can handle.
Tip 2: Be Organized: Use a planner to write down due dates and upcoming events
Tip 3: Manage your Time: prioritize a to-do list of tasks
Tip 4: Take a break: Mini breaks to stretch your shoulders, back and neck
Tip 5: Communicate: Talk with teachers, counselors, parents about issues that are stressful
Tip 6: Stay calm: Breath and count to 100.
Tip 7: Eliminate unnecessary stress: Release stressors you know you can. EX: Social Media
Tip 8: Set Goals: Be realistic in your goal setting
Tip 9: Be Focused: Create the proper space that allows you to focus
Tip 10: Sleep! Do NOT forget to sleep!
BONUS: Write Everything Down on Paper!!
Create a journal where you can write all your thoughts, worries and stress down before you got to bed. This allows for a clear mind as you prepare for the next day!
It may be a great idea to build some of these tips into your classroom to help your students. For example: The last five minutes of class everyday make students write in their planner any homework or projects that are due in your class in the future. Or, give them time to stand up, stretch, and breath deeply before they sit down and prepare for the lesson. Students need physical and emotional needs to be met before they can fully comprehend any content being taught that day. Care about your students physically and mentally as they strive to meet all the demands for the day.
